Dr Cherry has pioneered clinical academic careers and was one of the first podiatrists to undertake a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) clinical academic PhD and the first to be awarded an NIHR Post-Doctoral Fellowship. Dr Cherry has gone on to supervise many successful clinical academic students.

Dr Cherry has authored over 40 peer-reviewed papers, several book chapters, and contributed to various national and international clinical guidelines and policy-related publications. As the lead for personalised care research, Dr Cherry continues to work with fellow researchers, clinicians, clinical commissioning bodies and other stakeholder groups to improve access to and provision of foot care services.

The Academic Award
The Academic Award is bestowed upon individuals in recognition of an outstanding contribution to academic knowledge or practice. Podiatrists nominated for this award may be employed within the academic community as academics, clinical academics or clinical educators.

The award may be conferred upon early-career academics and researchers as well as mid-career academics and established academic leaders and will be granted in recognition of a member’s outstanding contribution to academic knowledge, education and/or research excellence.

Dr Halstead-Rastrick has specialised in MSK and rheumatology podiatry for the last 20 years. She holds degrees in Sport and Exercise Science (BSc 2000), Podiatry (BSc 2003), Health Research (MSc 2008) and a Doctorate of Philosophy (2013). She also holds a Visiting Research Fellow title at the University of Leeds and has received grants from Versus Arthritis and NIHR HEE. Dr Halstead-Rastrick has published in the fields of gait analysis, imaging, foot pain and foot osteoarthritis, and has collaborated nationally and internationally to publish research priorities and NICE guidelines in osteoarthritis.

Dr Halstead-Rastrick is the Joint Clinical Lead at Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust for both the podiatry and research departments. In the last decade, she has worked with the RCPod as the co-founder of MSKUK, to drive the MSK clinical strategy, the research strategy (as a member of the Research and Development Committee). Recently, she was the RCPod Project Lead for the Podiatrists as First Contact Practitioners work.

The Academic Award

Recipient of the Alf Morris Award

Neely Mozawala is a Specialist Diabetes Podiatrist with a background in biomechanics and podiatric surgery. She is also the Social Value Lead for Compass, the largest food service company in Europe. Neely is driving Compass’ social value forward, providing a positive impact to employees, communities and individuals nationally. She is a member of the NHS England Expert Panel Clinical Sub-Group focusing on improving NHS trusts nationally.

Neely is passionate about the health and wellbeing of NHS staff. In November 2019 she set up a successful campaign to secure 24/7 access to hot, nutritious and affordable food for NHS staff. The campaign received widespread support and achieved its mission a year later as an inclusion in the National Standards for Healthcare Food and Drink. Neely continues to lead the campaign, supporting NHS trusts, suppliers and small businesses to provide a gold standard 24/7 service for NHS staff.

The Alf Morris Award
This award has been established in honour of the late President of the RCPod, The Rt Hon Lord Morris of Manchester AO QSO, who died in 2012. The award reflects Lord Morris’s strong social conscience and the difference he made to the lives of ordinary, disadvantaged people. Lord Morris was a renowned campaigner and pioneer on behalf of the disabled. In 1970, his work led to the first disability rights legislation entitled ‘The Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act’ which sought to give people with disabilities equal opportunities in society and was the world’s first such legislation. The award is conferred upon members, fellows, or podiatry service teams who have made an exceptional, altruistic, personal or team contribution to the podiatric care of disadvantaged individuals or communities in the United Kingdom or abroad.

This may include service to those with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, or in support of military veterans, reflecting the legislative and policy achievements in these areas made by Lord Morris.

Dr Kilmartin qualified in 1985 and quickly took a special interest in the treatment of children’s foot problems. In 1988, he commenced a PhD study on juvenile hallux valgus.

Dr Kilmartin qualified as a Podiatric Surgeon in 1991. He went on to set up four podiatric surgery services. From the outset, Dr Kilmartin recognised the importance of training other podiatric surgeons and was involved in the tutelage and mentorship of 27 colleagues.

In 1998, Dr Tim Kilmartin became the first Dean of the Faculty of Podiatric Surgery at a challenging time in the history of the profession when the Podiatry Association and the Society of Chiropodists amalgamated. Throughout his career, Dr Kilmartin has been involved in the audit and research of podiatric surgery outcomes and has published over 85 papers.

During his 28 years of practice, Dr Kilmartin performed over 17,800 foot operations. He is a Visiting Professor at Ulster University and Visiting Lecturer at the Universities of Galway and Huddersfield respectively.

The Diamond Award
The Diamond Award is the RCPod’s highest honour. It is awarded to individuals who can demonstrate substantial, outstanding and exemplary contribution to the profession of podiatry over a sustained period of time.

It is conferred upon individuals who have given outstanding and exemplary service to the advancement of podiatry and are recognised as eminent or pre-eminent in a given field of professional practice or public service at national or international level.

At any one time there must not be more than 25 living recipients of the Diamond Award.

Dr Broxton is a scientist by background and has worked in a variety of commercial and operational roles in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

One of these roles was as a Director with Scholl UK, during which Dr Broxton helped develop several foot care products. In recent years Peter has helped small companies develop and commercialise medical devices across the UK and international markets.

Since 2016, Dr Broxton has been part of the team that developed and launched the PelliTec blister prevention pad. The pad was developed over three years and launched in the UK in 2019. Since then countries including the USA, Australia, Ireland and Japan have been added. Dr Broxton became Managing Director of the business in 2019.

The podiatry market was always a target for the pads – their cushioning and anti-friction properties have been shown to stop the recurrence of diabetic foot ulcers in a high-risk cohort.

The Innovation Award
The Innovation Award may be conferred upon an individual, a company or an organisation.

The recipient of the award must be able to evidence innovation in the design of a product or service which demonstrably constitutes an advance in professional practice.

The award may be made in recognition of a pioneering IT or digital project, an innovative clinical intervention or service design, an original teaching methodology or a pioneering research project that demonstrates innovation at its core.

Sandra qualified from the Edinburgh School of Chiropody in 1976, working in Caithness, Doncaster, and Staffordshire before returning to NHS Highland until retirement last year.

Locally, she was one of the first AHPs to be an accredited leader, Independent Prescriber, Fellow of the RCPod and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow (RCPSG) She was passionate about training and was involved with in-house seminars, diabetes events, University of Highlands and Islands courses and the Virtual Diabetes Foot Education Network.

A valued member of the national Scottish Diabetes Foot Action Group, she promoted Check, Protect, Refer (CPR) for Feet and SCI-DC Ulcer Management System, always advocating equal consideration for active foot disease and high-risk caseloads in rural areas of the Highlands. Her diabetes, orthopaedic, vascular and orthotics colleagues were incorporated, sometimes hesitantly, in her plans to ensure that care. As Chairperson of the local branch, she oversaw many educational events including one day conferences in 2009 and 2016. A further event was planned for 2020, later cancelled because of the pandemic.

Rachael graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University in 2003 and began working for NHS Grampian in Aberdeen City Podiatry Department. Rachael has continued to work for NHS Grampian in roles within podiatry, public health and partnership.

In 2011, Rachael was elected to the role of accredited staff side representative, and it was through this role that Rachael was elected to the role of Employee Director/Non-Executive Director/Chair of Staff Side for NHS Grampian from September 2018 until August 2022. As an accredited representative of the RCPod, working within NHS Grampian, Rachael found that not only was she able to provide signposting and support to members, but also to represent podiatry as a profession and AHPs at board level.

James qualified from University College London and The London Foot Hospital in 2001 and completed his Masters in the Theory of Podiatric Surgery in 2018. James is a paediatric podiatry leader. He is a podiatrist with extensive experience in both the NHS and private practice and is renowned for his natural enthusiasm and growth mindset.

He works and contributes nationally and internationally in advancing the profession, and in particular, paediatric podiatry. He has contributed to national position statements relating to the use of extracorporeal shockwave therapy in children’s leg conditions (2022), the children’s podiatry clinical framework in the UK (2022) and children’s footwear (2022) as well as research into calcaneal apophysitis and hypermobility.

James is the Vice Chair of the Children’s Podiatry Special Advisory Group and leads the administration of an international online group of over 2,500 members. He is a Deputy Professional Editor of The Podiatrist, with a distribution list of over 10,000 podiatrists and it is here that he leads on content about in paediatric podiatry.

Professor Chockalingam is the Director of the Centre for Biomechanics and Rehabilitation Technologies at Staffordshire University.

He has served on the boards of learned societies and supported several international scientific communities. He reviews for several journals and grant-awarding bodies worldwide. He is the Editor in Chief for The Foot and also an Associate Editor for the Footwear Science, Prosthetics and Orthotics International and Rehabilitation for Musculoskeletal Conditions journals. His research has received funding from various international bodies including the European Commission and the British Council.

His current activities at Staffordshire University focus on translational research. He has played a pivotal role in bringing various AHPs to the wider biomechanics and medical engineering community. He advocates for multi and interdisciplinary research, promotes gender equality and takes every effort to support students and young researchers.

He is involved in charitable and non-profit organisations to help the wider global community with healthy ageing and assistive technology to aid mobility.

Honorary Fellowship
The RCPod recognises a small group of individuals as honorary fellows. This category of fellowship is conferred by the RCPod upon individuals who would not normally qualify for fellowship of the organisation.

In addition to being a service user at Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, Peter is a retired AHP Principal Officer at the Department of Health in Northern Ireland. His career saw him volunteer with Diabetes UK and his work included the Diabetic Footcare Pathway and the Diabetic Network Workforce Review. He was a member of the Podiatry Public and Personal Involvement (PPI) Group Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and a member of the Care Opinion User Feedback Implementation Group for Northern Ireland.

Dr Turner has been a consultant dermatologist at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford, since 1999. In addition to his general dermatology interest, he also specialises in skin cancer, dermatological surgery, teledermatology and education. He has worked closely with the in-house podiatry team, who hold specialist dermatology/podiatry clinics weekly. He has also contributed to several educational meetings, presentations and publications for podiatrists in collaboration with Dr Ivan Bristow.

Evelyn is a Senior Lecturer at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.

Since 1995, Evelyn has provided podiatry care for homeless and vulnerably-housed individuals in Edinburgh voluntarily. Evelyn has links with many existing service providers for the homeless community. She provides foot care across a range of venues, including indoor pop-up venues. She also provides podiatry treatment on the streets, as well as shoe and sock provision. Her students have also provided assistance.

Evelyn has been the Podiatry Lead for Crisis at Christmas Edinburgh since it began, mostly face-to-face. However, during COVID-19, Evelyn provided podiatry care via telemedicine, aligned with the provision of patient-specific footcare packs.

Evelyn wishes to acknowledge the ongoing support of her husband David for his work with the logistics of the multiple podiatry sessions (he helps her to carry all the stuff….).

Dr Cameron is a podiatrist in private practice and owner of StEPS Podiatry in Troon, Scotland. She completed her PhD in 2010 and remains passionate about research and how it enhances clinical outcomes for her patients.

Dr Cameron believes that all podiatrists should have an equitable opportunity to engage in research and her current ambition is to advance opportunities in research for podiatrists working in the independent sector.

Dr Cameron is a Fellow of the Faculty of Podiatric Medicine at the RCPSG and is a chartered scientist with the Science Council.

Gafin Morgan is the first podiatrist in Wales to achieve Consultant status through the submission of a portfolio. He provides strategic and clinical leadership on expert practice for the conservative management of foot and ankle care across services including leading the Clinical Musculoskeletal Assessment and Treatment Service within Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.

He is a CASE (Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education) accreditated MSK sonographer providing expert diagnostics in trauma and MSK ultrasound including interventional ultrasound.

Gafin is a published researcher with an active portfolio, committed to the development of musculoskeletal management and its application within musculoskeletal medicine and general foot and ankle care.

Jim’s 43 years in the profession has included academic roles at the Northern College and Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer and Head of School roles at Huddersfield University. His clinical roles are primarily podiatric surgery working part-time as a Consultant Podiatric Surgeon for Mid-Yorkshire Hospitals Trust for over 20 years. His CPD has included gaining an MSc from Salford University, and College awards, holding both Surgical and Podiatric Medicine Fellowships.

He is an independent prescriber and holds surgical annotation with the HCPC. He has served on Council and co-wrote the College’s first edition of the ‘Guidelines on Clinical Practice’. He sat on the Surgical Faculty and on the Medicines Committee. He undertakes partner work for the HCPC.

He was able to draw on all aspects of his varied professional experience when successfully submitting his portfolio application for Chartered Scientist status.

Nadine qualified from Cardiff in 2007 with a degree in podiatry. She then went on to study for a Masters degree in Ageing, Health and Disease at Cardiff University while working full-time in the NHS. She has continued to work within the NHS for the last 16 years and is now based in London at the North East London NHS Foundation Trust as a care pathway lead for acute podiatry, specialising in wound care and the diabetic foot at Whipps Cross Hospital.

She is always open to exploring new technologies and ideas to improve service delivery and patient care and has presented her work internationally. She is also a keen advocate for improving access to podiatry for high-risk patients undertaking renal dialysis and has implanted a training programme for renal nursing staff to aid with the early detection of potential problems.

Allison is a highly motivated person who continuously strives to apply the best evidence in practice. Throughout her career in both the NHS and in private practice, she has continued to engage with literature, and colleagues to develop patient pathways in an attempt to deliver the best up-to-date, evidence-based care for all.

She is currently undertaking her professional doctorate investigating the provision of podiatry care for people with advanced-stage dementia living in care homes in Scotland. She hopes to add to the knowledge base and effect change to improve clinical outcomes for this population. Since a recent move into a career in academia, she has continued to engage with evidence to aid the journey on this steep learning curve. She is using the opportunity to network with various stakeholders and is looking forward to creating opportunities to get involved in varying projects.

Dr Urry trained originally as a podiatrist developing a professional interest in musculoskeletal disorders, human movement and biomechanics that prompted a transition to engineering where he gained his PhD from the School of Engineering Science at the University of Southampton. His uncommon skill set facilitated a productive academic and research career at universities in both the UK and Australia. He is an author on 30 original scientific articles, always striving for a balance between research, quality clinical standards and teaching excellence.

His balanced approach brought significant changes to the undergraduate curriculum in Australian universities. He was a Research Fellow at the Queensland Academy of Sport, and a member of the Medical Device Research Group at the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Brisbane. The breadth and depth of his experience expedited membership to the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. Currently, he is the Director of his own medical device company.

Declan graduated from Ulster University with BSc (Hons) Podiatry in 2014. Initially, he started working in private practice and developed an interest in podiatric surgery. He graduated from the University of Huddersfield with MSc Theory in Podiatric Surgery in 2019.

During his MSc studies, he worked as a Staff Podiatrist at Ilkeston Community Hospital. Later in 2019, he gained a post as a Trainee in Podiatric Surgery at Buxton Hospital under the tutorship of Mr Frank Webb. He recently achieved a Distinction in the Master of Podiatric Surgery course at the University of Huddersfield. Declan is also a non-medical prescriber. Declan’s main interests include the high-risk foot, surgical off-loading, and non-medical prescribing. He is keen to promote podiatric surgery and to develop further podiatric surgery services, especially in Northern Ireland.

Derek graduated with a BSc (Hons) degree in Podiatry from Cardiff in 2005. He completed an MSc in MSK studies of the lower limb from Cardiff before embarking on and completing the new Masters in Podiatric Surgery training programme from the University of Huddersfield in 2023. His training has been under the tutelage of Mr Richard Green at Wye Valley NHS Trust, gaining fellowship in 2023. He continues to pursue his role as a Specialist Registrar and work towards his CCPST in Wye Valley NHS Trust.

Derek recognises the need for learning and development and works as an associate lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University providing lectures as part of both the under and postgraduate podiatry programmes. He also works as a foot and ankle sonographer having established a diagnostic foot and ankle ultrasound service in his other role as an advanced practitioner in South Wales.

In 2009, Richard completed his undergraduate Podiatry degree at Glasgow Caledonian University. Richard then moved to East London to begin his NHS career. Richard’s surgical path started by completing his MSc Theory of Podiatric Surgery in 2018 at the University of Brighton. In the same year, Richard began working in Essex Partnership University Trust (EPUT) under the tutelage of Mr Jason Nandlal, where he became a Trainee in Podiatric Surgery in 2020. In 2023, Richard completed the Master of Podiatric Surgery course at the University of Huddersfield with Distinction as well as working towards his Independent Prescribing qualification. Richard now works as a Specialist Registrar in Podiatric Surgery within EPUT and is working towards the Certificate of Completion of Podiatric Surgery Training (CCPST).
