Catherine Bewsey
Chartered Counselling Psychologist
Catherine Bewsey
There are few psychologists embedded within foot teams and it is likely that she was one of the first. Her clinical role is to assess and treat patients and offer support, advice, consultation, and training to the multi-disciplinary footcare team.
The psychology role is important because people with diabetes foot problems often have complex mental and physical health issues and can be at risk of amputation. Challenges for footcare teams include understanding how their patient’s psychological issues contribute to their ability to self-manage and engage in their treatment.
Catherine has recent experience of working with the Integrated Care Board (ICB) where she led a psychology project with the South-West London Diabetes Foot Network. This role involved mapping psychological need and provision across six boroughs as well as designing a psychology service for acute and community foot clinics in Wandsworth. The project aimed to raise psychological awareness in community as well as acute footcare teams.
Results of the project show that there needs to be greater access to psychological support for patients across the diabetes pathway.
James Chan
Consultant Plastic Surgeon
James Chan
As a reconstructive plastic surgeon, my main drive is to help restore maximum function in people with musculoskeletal problems. Some of the most neglected people are those living with diabetic foot disease. As members of the diabetic foot MDT, we know we can transform lives by being proactive and enabling patients to get back up on their feet again. I also believe there are many patients in whom it would be possible to preserve limbs if only we can offer soft tissue reconstruction which is not routinely offered in most healthcare centres at present. To this end, I founded and now lead the Special Interest and Advisory Group on Diabetic Foot Reconstruction for the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons.
My NHS practice is based at Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe General and Amersham Hospitals in Buckinghamshire and I hold a Lectureship at Oxford University. I graduated from Cambridge University and completed a Doctorate of Philosophy at Oxford University as Senior Scholar of Lincoln College. Subsequently, I completed my higher surgical training within the Oxford region and underwent specialist microsurgery training in Taiwan which has allowed me to develop the techniques to perform limb salvage reconstructive surgery for diabetic foot disease.
Otto Chan
Consultant MSK Radiologist

I work with a dedicated Multidisciplinary Sports Team with state of the art imaging and treat patients from all aspects of sport including the Royal Ballet, English National Ballet, elite footballers, rugby players, cricketers, athletes, marathon runners, triathletes, as well as recreational athletes and all aspects of MSK disorders.
We have pioneered and published many imaging-based interventions, in particular high volume image-guided injections (HVIGI) and prolotherapy.
I was part of the Olympic medical team in London 2012, Honorary Radiologist to the British Paralympic Team in 2012, and helped set up the Nightingale Hospital (COVID-19 pandemic).

Pre-operative assessment forms an important component of holistic care in a patient’s perioperative journey. Identifying and optimising underlying comorbidities and lifestyle issues has a significant impact not only in the acute perioperative period but also for the long-term health of patients.
I am the sub-specialty lead for the centralised pre-operative assessment unit based at Solihull Hospital. This is a busy unit where we provide service for about 350 patients every week.
One of my key challenges is to ensure a pool of ‘pre-op ready’ patients is available and to minimise on-the-day cancellation.
My special interest is to ensure operational efficiency by standardising pre-operative pathways.
