One of the College’s main aims is to develop podiatrists into leaders, whatever sector they happen to work in. We want to see more podiatrists occupy the top leadership positions in the NHS, and in arm’s length bodies of government, so we can expand the profession’s influence within the wider healthcare sector.

There are several opportunities open to all members so that they can develop their leadership skills further.

The NHS Leadership Academy

There are several programmes available for aspiring leaders. These programmes provide development in leadership for people of all backgrounds and experiences across healthcare. You'll find all the information you need to support the development of your leadership career, from Foundation up to Executive level.

The NHS Leadership Academy also runs specific programmes for ethnic minorities.

  • The ‘Stepping up Programme’ is a leadership development programme for Bands 5 to 7 or equivalent
  • The Ready Now Programme for leaders working in the NHS or providing NHS-funded services in England at band 8a, or clinical equivalent or above.

You can find out more information about these programmes on the NHS Leadership Academy’s website.

The Royal College of Podiatry’s Leadership Programme.

We have created our own two-day Leadership Programme for our members. The aim of the programme is to educate podiatrists to become future healthcare leaders. Created in conjunction with Real Healthcare Solutions, delegates will get to:

  • Develop their own leadership toolkit
  • Apply their newly acquired skills in practice.

The programme supports delegates to realise that what they do and how they behave affects patients and service users’ experiences, the quality of care that is provided and the organisation.

Learning outcomes

  • Knowing what leadership means to you and others
  • Appreciating your leadership style, your qualities and your strengths
  • Understanding the need for flexibility in leadership and how to achieve it

When is the programme on in 2023?

We are confirming the 2023 course programme currently. The programme dates will be published when they are finalised on the Leadership Programme page.

Is the programme in-person or online?

Successful applicants will need to attend in-person at the RCPod’s central London office.

Leadership alumni

Members who complete the programme are invited to join the leadership alumnus. This network offers a way to continue developing their leadership skills. Alumni also get the chance to network with other Leadership Programme cohorts.
