What made you want to study podiatry?

Foot and ankle medicine and surgery were relatively ignored in the UK until 50 years ago, when podiatry took up the mantle of creating a dedicated profession for this area. I wanted to be part of this developing area.

What is the best thing about your job?

Receiving pictures from patients showing their feet after surgery and now wearing sandals, which they never did before the surgery because of anxiety and embarrassment.

What's the biggest impact you have had on a patient?

I commenced the speciality of cosmetic foot surgery in the UK, and we have so many happy patients whose lives we have positively changed, that it continues to bring many rewards professionally.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in podiatry?

I understand the graduate in-take is falling, so there will be lots of opportunities in the profession. Bear in mind that training for surgery spans over 10 years, so commitment to studying is important.
