Annual Conference 2021, ACC Liverpool

Multi-morbidity are we prepared as podiatrists

David Wylie, NMAHP Associate Director, NHS Education Scotland

Learning objectives

  • Understanding the burden of disease with specific focus on deprivation (where multiple co-morbidities are more prevalent)
  • Mapping AHP (in this case Podiatry) competencies to the disease burden as we already know it (and looking forward to what we know is already in the pipeline in terms of increased obesity; diabetes; PAD; dementia etc.)
  • Discussing the historic ‘specialist’ AHP workforce model where small numbers (sometimes VERY small numbers) of people develop very high level, narrow, specific, but deep skills vs the challenge of a sustainable workforce where a broader range of skills may be required to address multiple problems as part of single care packages rather than multiple versions – thereby streamlining the patient journey and integrating elements of care via shared pathways

Nina Davies, Clinical System Pathway Development Lead, Leeds Community Healthcare

  • To raise awareness of the challenges multimorbidity presents
  • To give context to systems working within diabetes care
  • To provide practical ways in which podiatrists can facilitate integrated working
