Royal College of Podiatry's response to a public consultation by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency on the proposed change to the protected title for podiatric surgery.

In October 2023, the Podiatry Board of Australia (Board) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) commissioned an independent review of the regulation of podiatric surgeons. The final report, which was published on 27 March 2024 made 14 recommendations that were all accepted by the Board and Ahpra. Recommendation 4 from the review is that: following consultation, the Podiatry Board seek Health Ministers’ approval to change the protected title for the specialty from ‘podiatric surgeon’ to an alternative title, such as ‘surgical podiatrist’.

To implement this recommendation, the Board consulted on a proposed change to the protected title.

The consultation ran from 30 September to 8 November 2024.
