Aims of the course

Diabetes-related foot disease is common, costly and often missed. This course gives you enriched, evidence-based content on the core complications. You will also learn advanced strategies to assess and manage them.

It’s enhanced CPD for NHS community teams, independent practitioners and First Contact Practitioners in primary care. HCPC registration is required.

Topics and learning time

1 Introduction What diabetes is, why it matters, pathophysiology and outcomes. Recorded lectures by Prof Fran Game.
2 Neurology Neurological assessment and management, including the Charcot foot.
3 Vascular Handheld Doppler, duplex ultrasound indications, toe and ankle brachial pressure indices.
4 Ulceration Wound assessment and treatment. Infection, tissue sampling and antibiotic stewardship.
5 Offloading Offloading, footwear and casting. Surgical interventions, from debridement to amputation.
6 Leadership Psychosocial factors, health literacy and inequalities. Then leadership and service development.
