International recruitment (IR) is a means of filling the gaps in the workforce within the UK. It has been used successfully in other professions including doctors, nurses, and radiographers. International recruits can bring expertise and new knowledge and skills to our profession that can be of benefit to the existing workforce and to patients. The resulting infill of the workforce gaps is part of workforce supply strategy for the NHS.

Employers need to develop a robust and fair recruitment process to recognise and promote equality and to provide support for social and cultural integration.

Employers recruiting overseas need to provide the following information for their new recruits:

  • Requirement for professional registration with the HCPC
  • Requirement of adequate and appropriate professional indemnity insurance
  • Structure of the NHS / independent sector
  • Required pre-employment checks and assessments prior to a job offer
  • Opportunity for membership with the Royal College of Podiatry (RCPod)
  • Codes of conduct and associated NHS values
