The twenty-first-century podiatrist

After thematic analysis of stakeholder contributions, podiatry’s twenty-first-century clinician was highlighted as an ‘Enhanced Generalist with a Special Interest’, mapping to a Band 6 role within the current career framework structure. This role has a core skill mix, knowledge, and behaviours associated with musculoskeletal (MSK), vascular, dermatology, wound care and surgical interventions for the foot and ankle.

The NHS Long Term Plan pushes for an acceleration of the shift from the dominance of highly specialised roles to a better balance with more generalised roles, which is being mirrored by the revision of the podiatry Career Framework.

To find out more, watch Molly Chilvers-Smith and Ben Bullen discuss what it means to be a podiatrist in the twenty-first century.
