The RCPod publishes new standards for podiatric surgical excellence

The RCPod's latest podiatric surgery guidance outlines what good looks like, from clinical skill to professional integrity
The Royal College of Podiatry (RCPod) has published Good Podiatric Surgical Practice, a new document setting out the professional standards, values and behaviours expected of podiatric surgeons in the UK.
The guidance draws on the principles of Good Medical Practice 2024 and Good Surgical Practice 2025, built to support the unique scope of podiatric surgery. It provides a clear standard for clinical excellence, patient-centred care and professional integrity across all settings, from NHS and independent practice to education, research and leadership.
The document restates the profession’s commitment to safe and effective surgical care and supports podiatric surgeons in maintaining high standards of competence, communication and accountability.
Key highlights from Good Podiatric Surgical Practice include:
- Podiatric surgeons are expected to maintain up-to-date knowledge, undertake regular audit and CPD and deliver safe, evidence-based care
- The guidance promotes informed consent, shared decision-making, and respectful communication tailored to individual needs
- Standards include transparency, safeguarding, sustainable practice and adherence to regulatory duties including the duty of candour
- Podiatric surgeons are encouraged to contribute to multidisciplinary teams, surgical training, and innovation in clinical practice.
Mr Ewan Kannegieter, Dean of the Faculty of Podiatric Surgery said:
“This publication is more than a code of conduct; it’s our statement of identity for podiatric surgery. It reflects our values and the trust placed in us by our patients, our colleagues and the public.”
The RCPod invites all podiatric surgeons, whether in training, in practice or in leadership, to implement these standards.
