World Cup Scottish Bank Holiday
Trade unions have secured an extra Bank Holiday for NHS staff in Scotland on 15 June, marking the country’s qualification for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
What's happened

Trade unions in Scotland have secured an extra Bank Holiday for NHS staff on 15 June.

The proposal was originally put forward by John Swinney, First Minister of Scotland, to mark the country’s first qualification for the World Cup finals since 1998.

While negotiations were not without challenge, sustained pressure from trade unions helped secure agreement on the additional holiday.

“This is a well-earned result for NHS staff in Scotland and a fitting way to mark an important moment for the country” said Martin Furlong, Deputy General Secretary of the RCPod.

Everyone at the RCPod wishes Scotland and England the very best in this summer’s FIFA World Cup 2026, with commiserations to the other UK nations who narrowly missed out.
