The RCPod advises its members to check that they are compliant with the legislation

From 1 April 2025, it will become mandatory for anyone in a regulated role working with children or vulnerable adults in Scotland to be registered with the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.

  • Self-employed workers in regulated roles must arrange their own PVG check
  • Employees should speak to their employer about company processes for checks
  • Employers must ensure they hold a copy of PVG certificates for staff and self-employed contractors

You can check whether a role is regulated using the Disclosure Scotland website or their online checker tool: Check if a role needs PVG scheme membership - mygov.scot

A three-month grace period will apply after the law comes into force on 1 April 2025.

Additionally, from 1 April 2026, lifetime PVG Scheme membership will end - scheme membership will need to be renewed every five years.

These changes are legal requirements, so members in Scotland should ensure they understand and comply with the PVG Scheme.
