A new working relationship between podiatric and orthopaedic surgery begins with this agreement

The Royal College of Podiatry (RCPod) and the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (BOFAS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), that creates a structured working relationship between podiatric surgery and orthopaedic surgery.

The MoU marks a key moment in interdisciplinary collaboration, following 14 months of dedicated dialogue between the two organisations.

For podiatric surgery, the MoU restates its unique role within the healthcare system, while identifying areas to consider for cooperation with orthopaedic surgery to improve patient outcomes for all foot and ankle patients.

The RCPod will officially launch the MoU on 9 January 2025, accompanied by a new guidance document tailored for NHS commissioners, directors, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), and referrers. These resources will provide vital insights into podiatric surgery’s capabilities and reaffirm its commitment to delivering excellence in foot and ankle care.
