Update on the latest guidance on mask use for members in Scotland

In its latest guidance, published on 7 October 2022, the Scottish Government strongly recommends that facemasks continue to be worn in clinical settings.

Members working in clinical settings should therefore continue to wear an IIR facemask where face-to-face consultations and treatments are taking place; patients should be asked to wear a facemask unless exempt.

Advice about mask use during healthcare visits to social care settings is also included in the Scottish Government update.

The Royal College of Podiatry (RCPod) reminds members that if using a nail drill an FFP mask type must be worn.

NHS employees in Scotland

Members working in the NHS can check with their employer for their Health Board protocols.

Independent sector

For those working in independent sectors as employers, clinical leads or lone workers, please update your workplace protocols using the information provided by the Scottish Government here.

Employees and associates in the independent sector should check with their employer or clinical lead regarding workplace protocols.

Please note that changes to mask use in the social care sector do not apply to podiatry clinics, a healthcare setting.
